Girls Can Do!

A Day of Fun, Empowerment and Adventure:

Girls and their parent(s) or guardians will assemble to build a small table, that they can take home (like a night stand table), and learn to use manual tools and power tools.

  • Goal for workshop – intro girls to tool use, concepts of building and allow them to have a successful experience of hands-on building.

End of workshop families will share a meal.

After supper a Women’s Circle will take place.   Goals for Circle:

  • To allow girls to hear and participate in stories of what and how women build (material things, relationships, life constructs – etc).
  • To Increase empowerment, self-trust, caring and relational competence. Introduces girls to the positive experience of a support circle

End of Circle – Girls receive a Certificate

A women’s circle is a safe and time-honored protected space for women to come together, use their voices, be heard and be seen.   Women throughout history have gathered in circles to empower each other and share wisdom.  These affirming community gatherings help women get in touch with their strength, see and be seen by their peers, and turn life experiences and obstacles into positive building blocks of character.  With politics dividing us further every day, women need community more than ever.

This Circle of Women and Girls is designed to be a fun, inter-active and social experience.

From the hands-on building experience in the first part of the workshop, girls learn they CAN implement practical living skills – in this case, building.   Children who crawl and then walk, in mimicry of adults, then have a practical, personal foundational path in the nerve network of the brain and body, to speak, to be active in the world and to make change.   Tool skills are a human right of passage, often denied girls.   While “Girls Can Do” has a focus of empowerment for girls in many kinds of life skills, this part of the workshop is about building.

In Circle girls will learn that all of their feelings are OK, including anger, and impatience and that they can grow, transform and be powerful.  They will learn that there are many diverse models of strength, of action and of leadership.   The facilitators will provide some historical stories, but the majority will be personal.

These kinds of women’s circles can cultivate self-esteem, self-confidence, and –what girls at this age are particularly hungry for–a feeling of being grounded on Mother Earth and lovingly held by something larger than themselves.

“How might your life have been different if there had been a place for you, a place for you to go to be with your mother, with your sisters and the aunts, with your grandmothers, and the great, and great-great grandmothers, a place of women to go, to be, to return to as woman?

How might your life be different?”
